2) Type in your address and Zip Code to find a local credit union (only your Zip Code is needed).

3) Located just under the name of the credit union will be a list of the membership requirements. Many credit unions only require you to live or work in the area, so call them and ask a few questions to make sure it is a fit for you:

“Who is eligibile for membership to the credit union?”

“What services are provided at the credit union?”

4) Once you have found you are eligible for membership, go to the credit union and open an account.

• Meet with the credit union to see if you can refinance any credit cards, or auto loans to better rates. Many credit unions do not even charge “balance transfer fees,” and interest rates are much lower when compared to a bank.

5) Go to your bank and close your account.
